Each TAP Controller can only be monitored and controlled from a single TAP Kiln Control Mobile user account. However, if you want multiple people to be able to monitor a single kiln, you can create one user account and share the password amongst multiple users. That way, multiple users can be logged in simultaneously. This is a great feature to use in a studio environment if students would like to check on their project status. Below are descriptions of each...

Capacitive touchscreens usually have a glass display that is coated with a transparent conductor that responds to conductive inputs (such as your fingertip!). It doesn’t require pressure to activate. Capacitive touchscreens have more of a ‘swiping’ feel and are capable of recognizing multi-touch gestures.

You’re probably used to interacting with capacitive touchscreens on your smartphone or tablet.

A resistive touchscreen has a plastic screen overlay that requires pressure to activate. Resistive touchscreens have more of a ‘pressing’ or ‘tapping’ feel. Today, resistive touchscreens are less common in day-to-day life, but a lot of ATMs still use resistive touchscreens.

TAP II Pro, TAP Micro, TAP&Go, and TAP Monitor all use capacitive touchscreens for better viewing angles and faster responsiveness.

TAP II uses a resistive touchscreen which has several potential advantages when it comes to heat treat:

You can use a TAP II Controller even if you’re still wearing protective gloves when operating your kiln.
Heat treat requires precision – resistive touchscreens are less susceptible to accidental inputs.
Inputs on a resistive touchscreen aren’t as affected by debris.

Note: You should regularly clean your TAP Controller’s screen, but it is designed as a piece of work equipment that can withstand studio or workspace environments.

Additionally, TAP Kiln Control Mobile offers a free and paid plan, with the free plan providing more features and functionality than you'd get with paid versions of KilnAid or KilnLink.

For instance, Bartlett KilnAid charges $1.99/month or $19.99/year for push notification alerts and alarms, firing logs, and diagnostic data. All of those are free on TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

Please note: For the original TAP Controller, you will need to purchase the WiFi Dongle to connect to WiFi; TAP II, TAP II Pro, TAP Micro, TAP Monitor, and TAP&Go all have integrated WiFi.

Before being able to link your TAP Kiln Control Mobile app to your TAP Controller, you will need to:

Download the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app on your smart phone or tablet (download for Android or iOS) and set up your account by following the prompts on the app’s screen.
Connect your TAP Kiln Controller to a wireless network via the controller interface by going to Menu>Settings>Network>Wireless, selecting the desired network and entering any required credentials.

TAP Controllers are only able to connect to wireless networks that meet the following requirements:

2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.
Unsecured networks are also supported – but networks that use a captive portal (a la many cafes and airports) are not.
Signal strength of at least two bars is recommended. Once both of these conditions are met, linking your TAP Kiln Control Mobile app to your controller is super easy.

On your controller, go to Menu>Settings>Network to find your controller’s UID (Unique Identifier):

Short Answer: No, any given TAP Controller can only be monitored and controlled from a single TAP Kiln Control Mobile user account. But there is a workaround...

Each TAP Controller can only be monitored and controlled from a single TAP Kiln Control Mobile user account. However, if you want multiple people to be able to monitor a single kiln, you can create one user account and share the password amongst multiple users.

That way, multiple users can be logged in simultaneously. This is a great feature to use in a studio environment if students would like to check on their project status.

We are currently working on developing a Studio Mode to allow multiple users to monitor the same kiln with different permissions, which will be awesome for a studio or classroom setting. That will be coming soon!

What's a UID and where do I find it?

A UID is a unique identifier associated with all TAP Kiln Controllers. It is used as a way to address the controller and make sure that the right data is going to the right place.

Why is there a subscription fee for the Premium Plan of the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app?

Short Answer: All subscription fees for TAP Kiln Control Mobile go directly back into the app for maintaining our servers, developing new features, and providing improvements for all users. Without these fees, we wouldn't be able to provide TAP Kiln Control Mobile as a service for all of our users.

While we’d love to be able to give away all of the premium features of the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app for free, developing an app was a major investment for us – and we have big plans for future upgrades. 100% of the net subscription fees for the Premium Plan go directly back into the app for maintaining our servers, developing new features, and providing improvements for all users.

We understand why some users are frustrated by the prospect of having to pay a subscription for an app when they already made a significant investment in buying a new kiln or controller. While we’re sympathetic to this frustration, we do want to remind you that you’re not paying a subscription to use your controller, you’re paying a subscription to use our app – which is completely optional and more of a convenience factor!

My TAP Controller won't respond to touch. What should I do?

Follow these steps to initiate the Touchscreen Calibration Utility for your original TAP, TAP II, or TAP II Pro Controller...

Please note: The process of recalibrating your touchscreen is the same for TAP, TAP II, and TAP II Pro, unless you’re using an original TAP Controller which hasn’t been updated to Software Version 5.0 or higher (in which case you can find instructions at the bottom of this page).

First, take a deep breath. We know it's scary when your controller stops responding. But the vast majority of the time you just need to recalibrate your touchscreen. This only takes a few seconds.

Steps for Recalibrating Your Touchscreen

Turn your TAP Controller off and on again 3 times to automatically bring up the touchscreen calibration utility. When rebooting your controller, make sure you wait until the Warning Screen appears each time before restarting again AND you don’t acknowledge the warning banner.

Once the Touchscreen Calibration Utility launches, tap and hold the 5 points that are indicated on screen via a yellow crosshair pattern that appears on the screen going clockwise from the upper left corner. You will move sequentially through the points from upper left to upper right to lower right to lower left to center. Tap and hold each point for approximately 5 seconds for best results.

Instructions for Original TAP Controller That Hasn’t Been Updated

If you’re using an original TAP Controller [discontinued] that hasn’t been updated to Software Version 5.0 or higher, we strongly recommend updating your controller software.

However, you can still recalibrate your touchscreen in the meantime. First, tap around your screen until you find an area of the screen that responds. Then, tap and hold that point for ~30 seconds to launch the Touchscreen Calibration Utility, and follow the on-screen prompts.

Question 24

My TAP Controller is forgetting the date and time between reboots. Is there a battery on the controller board that needs to be replaced?

Short Answer: Your controller forgetting time and date between reboots is indication that you need to replace your clock battery.

Does your kiln controller keep forgetting the date or time every time you restart your controller? That means the coin cell battery needs to be replaced.

You can find the clock battery on the back of your controller's circuit board. Usually, you can access it by unscrewing the front display of your controller – though you may need to detach your wiring harness to create additional access to the back of your controller.

The controller will accept standard CR1220 or CR1225 batteries.

My controller isn’t displaying any available wireless networks. What should I do?

Short Answer: If your TAP Controller isn't displaying any available WiFi networks, the most common cause is trying to connect to an unsupported network.

First, please verify that you’re attempting to connect to a supported network. Network requirements are below:

2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.
Unsecured networks are also supported – but networks that use a captive portal (a la many cafes and airports) are not.
WPA3 and EAP networks are not supported.
Signal strength of at least two bars is recommended (network latency or weak signal strength can negatively affect controller online status).

If you’re still using an original TAP Controller, make sure your WiFi dongle is properly installed in the controller’s USB drive.

If you’re using a TAP II, TAP II Pro, or any other TAP Kiln Control Product, inspect the antenna and make sure it is unobstructed and pointed towards your router and doesn’t have any signs of damage.

Question 26

My kiln is reading negative temperatures. What should I do?

Short Answer: Negative temperature readings are usually caused by incorrect thermocouple installation.

If your kiln reading negative temperatures, this is usually a relatively straightforward fix.

The thermocouple on your kiln is likely installed with polarity reversed. Please contact your kiln manufacturer for assistance in resolving this issue.

I received an error message stating the firing aborted because the kiln was failing to heat. Is it a faulty relay?

Many issues that seem controller-related are actually related to other components of your kiln. Troubleshooting should always begin by contacting your kiln manufacturer.

They will be able to walk you through troubleshooting and help you confirm whether the issue is related to your TAP Controller or another component of your kiln.

The vast majority of controller-related issues can be easily resolved with simple troubleshooting. You can find troubleshooting steps for most issues in the Troubleshooting Section of this FAQ. Sometimes it’s just a matter of rebooting your controller!

If it’s determined my controller needs repair, what are the next steps?

Short Answer: If your controller needs repairs, you will have to fill out a Repair Authorization Form and remove your controller from your kiln to send it in for repairs.

Once it’s determined your kiln controller needs repairs, we will have you complete a Repair Authorization Form and send you a return label.

To remove the controller to send in for repairs:

Turn off power to the kiln/control box.
On the back of the controller, grasp each of the red friction lock connectors that have wires going into them, one at a time, and wiggle them off the controller.
Find the thermocouple wires entering a green block, depress the orange tab with a screwdriver, and tug the wires out.
The controller will now be free of the control box and can be returned.

Please make sure to securely package your controller for shipping, including adequate padding.

Once you have shipped your controller, you will receive a shipping tracking number and we will contact you once we have received your controller and keep you fully informed about the repair process.

If you receive an error message on your controller, there's a good chance that your error is related to another component of your kiln like a relay or a thermocouple. The installation process for your controller very much depends on what controller configuration you purchase.

TAP Conversion Kits and TAP Standalone Controllers are designed so that users can seamlessly install a TAP II or TAP II Pro Controller on their current build with no (or minimal) modification to their kiln or oven. Unless you’re a competent DIYer, we recommend starting there!

So, what's the difference?

TAP Conversion Kits are used for swapping out your existing automatic controller. Standalones are used for upgrading manual kilns to programmable digital TAP Controls. We’ll be covering installation steps for those below:

Installing TAP Standalone Controllers

Installing a TAP Standalone Controller is a straightforward, plug-and-play operation:

At this point, your controller installation is complete, and your standalone unit is ready to control (or precisely monitor) the temperature of your kiln. Just power on your kiln, and you’re good to go!

Installing a TAP Conversion Kit

Conversion kit installations are only slightly more complicated than installing a standalone unit. Below are the steps for a kiln controller DIY installation using a conversion kit:

Make sure to purchase a kiln controller conversion kit that’s compatible with the wiring and controller housing for your current controller. Before purchasing a kiln temperature controller conversion kit, you need to know whether your current kiln controller is a 3-key, 12-key, or smart controller. So how do you tell the difference? Easy, just look at the inputs on your current controller. A 3-key controller has three input buttons; a 12-key controller has 12, and a smart controller uses a touchscreen. (SDS Industries includes drop down menus on our conversion kit shop pages, so that you can select the controller you’re replacing to ensure a perfect match. Also, it’s important to note that TAP Kiln Controller Conversion Kits can be used to replace automatic kiln controllers from other manufacturers, such as Bartlett, Orton, Paragon, and Skutt.)
Turn off and unplug your kiln. When it's time to install your kiln controller conversion kit, you should power off and unplug your kiln as a safety precaution.
Remove the old automatic controller from your kiln. First things first, disconnect power to the kiln and controller by unplugging the unit from the wall and/or turning off the circuit breaker! This is no joke – failure to do so may result in injury or death! Removing your old kiln controller is straightforward. You should find four mounting screws on the corners of your old unit. Remove these mounting screws using a socket driver or a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove your old controller unit from its housing, detach the thermocouple leads from your old controller, and remove the wiring harness that connects your old controller to your kiln.
Install the new controller mounting box. Your DIY kiln controller conversion kit will include a mounting box to house your new controller. Pass the thermocouple leads and wiring through the middle of the mounting box and screw in the mounting box to your kiln (occasionally, it may be necessary to drill new holes to screw in the mounting box; however, this is only in rare cases and will be the only modification needed to your kiln or oven).
Plug the new wiring harness adapter into your kiln. The wiring harness adapter for your new kiln controller will plug right into your kiln’s existing wiring harness.
Reattach the thermocouple leads to your new controller. The plug-in for your thermocouple lead will be marked on the controller board of your new controller.
Attach the wiring harness adapter to your new controller. You will find plugs in the back of your controller that match the plugs on the new wiring harness adapter.
Screw in the new controller faceplate to your controller mounting box. Voila! Your kiln controller installation is complete!

Please note: Please note: we do not provide direct technical support for new kiln builds. What type of relay should I use with my TAP Controller?

Short Answer: Every TAP Kiln Controller model is compatible with mechanical, mercury, and solid state relays – but we strongly recommend using a solid-state relay.

TAP Kiln Control Products are compatible with mechanical, mercury, and solid-state relays (SSRs). So, which type of relay is right for you? Generally, we recommend using solid-state relays: the upsides and long-term savings far outweigh the added upfront cost.

Mechanical relays have moving parts. That means they're subject to normal wear and tear. They will fail eventually, it’s just a matter of when. That’s why it’s super important to have a defined preventative maintenance plan when working with mechanical relays. (Also, while mechanical relays are less expensive upfront, regular replacement costs leads to them being the most expensive option in the long run.)

Mercury relays were a great substitute for mechanical relays in that they weren’t subject to the same contact erosion in high current applications. However, they use the highly toxic liquid metal mercury to perform switching. These days, they’re largely obsolete and even outlawed in states such as California. Mercury relays have largely been replaced by solid-state relays.

Solid-state relays have no moving parts and aren’t subject to the same wear and tear considerations as mechanical relays. They are superior to mechanical or mercury alternatives in lifetime, performance, and environmental considerations. However, their Achilles heel is heat. SSRs must be appropriately cooled via heat sink to maintain proper performance and prevent melting.

Most new kilns have the option for solid-state relays – you should strongly consider choosing that option. If you’ve got an older kiln with mechanical or mercury relays, consider swapping them out for a solid-state the next time they need replacement!

The TAP II Pro and the discontinued original TAP Kiln Controller are multi-zone temperature kiln controllers that can be configured to accept inputs from up to 3 thermocouples and provide outputs for 3 different elements.

These controllers are compatible with Type R, Type S, and Type K thermocouples.

TAP II is a single zone controller and can only be wired to a single thermocouple. The same is true for TAP Monitor, TAP Micro, TAP&Go, and TAP Monitor.

All of our kiln control products – both single zone and multi-zone – are PID temperature controllers that are designed to deliver maximum precision.

For TAP II and TAP II Pro, to add a schedule to your Favorites, just tap the Star Icon next to the schedule name on the Schedule Selector screen.

However, the instructions for executing these functions from your controller's touchscreen may not be applicable to TAP&Go, TAP Micro, or the discontinued original TAP Kiln Controller, since they either have limited touchscreen functionality or a different UI.

How to Set a Delay Start:

From The Controller's Touchscreen:

To start a firing, press Start. Select or program your desired schedule and press Start again. You will be prompted if you want to set a delayed start.

If you click "Yes" on the prompt, you'll pull up a keypad where you can type the amount of time you want your kiln to wait before starting the schedule.

Enter this number in HH.MM format (or the amount of hours followed by the amount of minutes) you want your kiln to wait before starting the firing.

If you no longer wish to be shown the option to set a Delay Start, you can turn that off in your settings.

From TAP Kiln Control Mobile:

From TAP Kiln Control Mobile, you can remotely start a firing schedule with a premium subscription. However, from the mobile app, firings start immediately after typing in your confirmation code. You will not have the option to set a Delay Start.

How to Abort a Firing

From The Controller's Touchscreen:

From the Execute Schedule Screen, tap the button on the right labelled Abort Firing and confirm you want to abort your firing. If your kiln controller is showing the temperature in large font, you may need to tap the screen one time first to return to the Execute Screen.

From TAP Kiln Control Mobile:

During an active firing, click the Overview Button to pull up the details of your current schedule. Near the top of the screen you'll see a row of 4 blue buttons under the Firing Progress Bar.

Click the one in the shape of an X (second from the right) and confirm you want to abort the firing.

Since this feature is important for kiln safety, it's free for all users.

How to Skip a Step

From The Controller's Touchscreen:

From the Execute Schedule Screen, tap the button on the right to Skip Step and confirm you want to skip a step. If your kiln controller is showing the temperature in large font, you may need to tap the screen one time first to return to the Execute Screen.

From TAP Kiln Control Mobile:

During an active firing, click the Overview Button to pull up the details of your current schedule. Near the top of the screen you'll see a row of 4 blue buttons under the Firing Progress Bar.

Click the one that looks like a Fast Forward Icon (all the way to the right) and confirm you want to skip a step.

This feature is free for TAP II Pro users but requires a premium subscription for the TAP II Controller.

How to View a Firing Graph

For all of our current kiln control products, you can view your Firing Graphs for free from TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

From the app, just select your kiln. On the bottom of the screen, press Event Logs and then select Firing Logs. Then click the schedule to pull up a Firing Graph.

For TAP II and TAP II Pro Controllers, press Start to access your schedules. Select the schedule you want to delete and press Delete Schedule. Then, confirm on the pop-up notification that you want to delete the schedule.

To delete a schedule on the original TAP Controller [now discontinued], navigate to Menu>Schedules then select the schedule you want to delete and press Delete Schedule.

However, please note: Once you delete a schedule you will not be able to get it back.

As opposed to traditional preprogrammed schedules, Cone Fire Mode adjusts dynamically to your needs based on selecting the cone number of the clay you're firing and adjusting a few settings.

Below are the steps for using Cone Fire Mode:

Turn Cone Fire Mode on in your controller settings: From your controller’s Home Screen, press Menu>Settings>Firing Settings. Then toggle the Fire Mode to Cone Fire. (If you already have Cone Fire enabled, you can skip this step).

Short Answer: The preprogrammed schedules that came with your kiln were uploaded by your kiln manufacturer.

Any preprogrammed schedules included on your controller are directly from your kiln manufacturer. For information about your preprogrammed schedules, please contact the manufacturer of your kiln.

If you want, you can delete your preprogrammed schedules, but do so carefully. Because once they're gone, they're gone forever.

I accidentally deleted all the preset programs that came with my kiln. Is there a way to get them back?

Short Answer: Unfortunately, there is no way to automatically recover firing schedules once they've been deleted.

Other than TAP II Pro's Cone Fire Mode, schedules loaded at the time of receipt are pre-loaded by the kiln manufacturer. SDS Industries does not produce or deliver these preset schedules and cannot help you recover or recreate these.

Please contact your kiln manufacturer for help in restoring the schedules. Also, we want to note: TAP lets you save unlimited custom schedules and favorite schedules for faster access, so always think carefully about deleting your schedules!

For all of our kiln controllers, you can email your Firing Logs to yourself from the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app by going to Event Logs and selecting Email All Logs (if the mobile app is prior to version 4.4.3, navigate to Event Logs>Firing Logs).

You will then be prompted by a popup to confirm that you want to email all logs.

Select Yes, and your logs will be sent to the email address you used to register for the app.

From your email address, you can then open your logs or download them to your desktop.

Unlike Bartlett Genesis 2.0 and Skutt Kilnmaster, which only store firing logs for your last 10 firings, TAP Kiln Controllers let you store and access all of your firing logs at any time.

Please note: You can only offload logs when the controller is in Standby (i.e., not executing an active firing).

The discontinued original TAP Controller (when connected to WiFi and updated to Software Version 6.0 or higher) also gives you the ability to export your logs from the controller by navigating to Menu>Event Logs and selecting Offload Logs. TAP Products give users the ability to automatically track life expectancy for relays, elements, and thermocouples via the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app.

Here's how:

From the app's Summary Screen, select your kiln.
Click Settings at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll down, and you'll find fields to enter this information.

Once you've entered this information, clicking Diagnostics at the bottom of the app will allow you to track your usage for each of these components.

Your controller will alert you automatically when it's time to replace these components before they impact the performance of your kiln.

How to Find Component Life Expectancy

Need help finding this information? Typically, you can find these on the datasheet for each component or by contacting your kiln manufacturer.

Relays generally have a data field called out on the datasheet for Contact Rating Cycles or Mechanical Endurance.

Thermocouples and elements may not have a datasheet readily available, or you may not know what brand/model your kiln uses. In this case, it is best to reach out to your kiln manufacturer.

How do I use Delay Start on my TAP Kiln Controller?

Short Answer: Delay Start is in HH.MM format. This corresponds to the numbers of hours (HH) and minutes (MM) from now you want the program to start.

TAP's Delay Start function is the amount of time from now that your controller will wait before starting your schedule.

You'll enter it on your controller in HH.MM format (the number of Hours followed by the number of Minutes). So if you entered, 01.20, your controller would wait one hour and twenty minutes before starting your firing schedule.

When creating a schedule, your TAP Kiln Controller will ask you if you want to program a delayed start. Click "Yes" here, and you'll be presented with a keypad where you enter your preferred delay start time.

Below are examples of possible Delay Start entries, as well as what they'd command your controller to do:

00.00 – Start the firing immediately
00.01 – Start the firing 1 minute from now
00.15 – Start the firing 15 minutes from now
01.01 – Start the firing 1 hour and 1 minute from now
12.00 – Start the firing 12 hours from now

We recommend adhering to the format above. But your TAP Kiln Controller will also translate any numbers entered into the Minutes Field into hours, i.e. the examples below:

00.90 – The controller will start the fire 1 hour and 30 minutes from now
01.90 – The controller will start the firing 2 hours and 30 minutes from now (1 hour + 90 minutes)

As an alternative to Delay Start, you can use Remote Start with a premium subscription of TAP Kiln Control Mobile to start your firing any time from your smartphone or tablet.

In the meantime, you can program your controller to automatically calculate firing costs for individual firings and then add up that information manually.

TAP Controllers include options for Setpoint Alerts and Hold Alerts. Setpoint Alerts let you know when a specific temperature has been reached. Hold Alerts let you know when a hold time is about to expire.

These alerts can be turned on/off for each step of a specific firing schedule. And you can decide whether you want to receive these alerts from your controller unit or as push notifications on TAP Kiln Control Mobile (or both!)

Both alerts and alarms generate visual and audible notifications on your controller (as well as push notifications to your phone via the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app) to inform you about the status of your kiln, your controller, and/or the status of your current firing schedule.

So, what’s the difference?

Alerts are user-defined, meaning you set the parameters for an alert to be generated. You can use alerts to keep you informed about specific conditions you want to keep track of – such as when a setpoint temperature has been reached or a hold time is about to expire.

Alarms are controller-defined, meaning the controller determines the parameters for an alarm to be generated. Alarms let you know when an unexpected condition has occurred. These include conditions such as the kiln exceeding maximum allowable temperature or failing to cool.

With TAP Kiln Controllers, you can turn on/off Alerts and Alarms universally – or turn on/off alerts for specific schedules and specific steps.

Turning On/Off Alerts and Alarms From Your Controller

On your TAP Kiln Controller, you can turn on/off all alerts and alarms (universally) by going to Menu>Settings>Notifications.

Or, you can toggle on/off alerts for individual steps. From your controller, press Start and click the Edit Icon. On the next screen, you'll see every step of your firing schedule with toggles for Setpoint Alerts and Hold Alerts.

Please note: Turning Alerts and Alarms off universally will override the selections you made for individual schedule steps.

Turning On/Off Alerts and Alarms From TAP Kiln Control Mobile

You can also adjust these settings from TAP Kiln Control Mobile. To turn on/off all alerts and alarms universally, select your kiln, select Settings and scroll down to Notifications to choose your universal settings.

To turn on/off alerts for specific schedules, go to Schedules, select the schedule you want to edit, and press the Edit Icon.

Short Answer: TAP Controllers require a 2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.

TAP Controllers are only able to connect to wireless networks that meet the following requirements:

2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.
Unsecured networks are also supported – but networks that use a captive portal (like many cafes and airports) are not.
WPA3 and EAP networks are not supported.
Signal strength of at least two bars is recommended.

Do I need the WiFi dongle to connect my TAP Controller to WiFi?

Short Answer: No, TAP II, TAP II Pro, TAP Monitor, TAP Micro, and TAP&Go all have integrated WiFi and do not require a WiFi dongle. Only the discontinued original TAP Controller requires a WiFi dongle to connect to WiFi

A TP-Link TL-WN823n WiFi Dongle is only needed to connect the original TAP Controller to local WiFi networks and can be purchased here.

TAP II and TAP II Pro, as well as all of our other controllers, have integrated WiFi and do not require a WiFi Dongle

If you’re unsure what type of controller you’re using, you can easily tell the difference between an original TAP and a TAP II or TAP II Pro Controller by looking at the user interface:

You can tell the difference between the discontinued original TAP Kiln Controller and a TAP II or TAP II Pro Kiln Controller by looking at the placement of the start button.
