If you’re having issues with your kiln, you should begin troubleshooting by contacting your kiln manufacturer who will confirm whether or not your issue is related to your controller.

Many issues that seem controller-related are actually related to other components of your kiln. Troubleshooting should always begin by contacting your kiln manufacturer.

They will be able to walk you through troubleshooting and help you confirm whether the issue is related to your TAP Controller or another component of your kiln.

The vast majority of controller-related issues can be easily resolved with simple troubleshooting. You can find troubleshooting steps for most issues in the Troubleshooting Section of this FAQ. Sometimes it’s just a matter of rebooting your controller!

If you are still unable to resolve your issue, please contact SDS Industries. We will provide further troubleshooting steps, run diagnostics for your controller, and then initiate the repair process if it’s determined that your issue requires repair.

If it’s determined your kiln controller needs repairs, follow these steps.

how do i know if my kiln controller needs repairs should i send in my kiln controller for repairs signs i need repairs for my controller

Short Answer: If your controller needs repairs, you will have to fill out a Repair Authorization Form and remove your controller from your kiln to send it in for repairs.

Once it’s determined your kiln controller needs repairs, we will have you complete a Repair Authorization Form and send you a return label.

To remove the controller to send in for repairs:

  • Turn off power to the kiln/control box.
  • On the back of the controller, grasp each of the red friction lock connectors that have wires going into them, one at a time, and wiggle them off the controller.
  • Find the thermocouple wires entering a green block, depress the orange tab with a screwdriver, and tug the wires out.
  • The controller will now be free of the control box and can be returned.

Please make sure to securely package your controller for shipping, including adequate padding.

Once you have shipped your controller, you will receive a shipping tracking number and we will contact you once we have received your controller and keep you fully informed about the repair process.

Before sending in your controller for repair, contact your kiln manufacturer to confirm whether the issue is related to your controller.

TAP Kiln Controllers are overwhelmingly reliable. Across over 700,000 hours of recorded firing time and 500,000 successful firings (just for controllers connected to WiFi), TAP Kiln Controllers have well under a 1% field failure rate over the past decade. That’s why we can back our mainline controllers with an industry-leading 3-year warranty!.

If you receive an error message on your controller, there’s a good chance that your error is related to another component of your kiln like a relay or a thermocouple. Before sending your controller in for repairs, please contact your kiln’s manufacturer for troubleshooting. They will be able to walk you through troubleshooting and help you confirm whether the issue is related to your TAP Controller or another component of your kiln.

If it’s determined that your controller requires repairs, please send us an in-depth description of your issue on our Report a Problem page. We will provide additional troubleshooting, run diagnostics for your controller, and help initiate the repair process if necessary. Depending on the issue, we’ll give you a timetable for repairs and do everything in our power to get you back up and running as soon as possible!
