The TAP Kiln Control Mobile app gives you complete control of your kiln or oven from the palm of your hand. With the app, you will be able to monitor your kiln, make adjustments, and perform all TAP Controller functions from your mobile device:

  • Create a TAP Kiln Control Mobile account and easily add all your TAP Controllers.
  • Monitor your kiln with real-time updates and push notifications.
  • Quickly check the status of your kiln with easy-to-read indicators.
  • View all schedules, settings, diagnostics, and error logs.
  • Remotely create, edit, and save firing schedules.
  • Create and modify kiln settings.
  • Modify your kiln firing in real-time.
  • View firing logs with by-the-minute data points.
  • Skip steps and abort firings.
  • Remotely start your kiln (available with a premium subscription).

The TAP Kiln Control Mobile app gives users more flexibility, more peace of mind, and more control over their projects. The app is so robust that some of our newer controller options – TAP Monitor, TAP Micro, and TAP&Go – are all designed to be almost entirely controlled from the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app.

TAP Kiln Control Mobile is free to use on every TAP Kiln Controller – with an optional upgrade to a premium subscription for even more cutting-edge capabilities.

Explore the industry’s highest rated kiln control app, with 4.9 stars on the App Store and 4.1 stars on Google Play.

what can i do with tap kiln control mobile what are the benefits of the tap kiln control mobile how can i use tap kiln control mobile

TAP Kiln Control Mobile is (by far!) the highest rated kiln control app and the only one that offers true remote control.

Note: All app reviews for the TAP Kiln Control Mobile, as well as the apps from other kiln controller manufacturers, were collected in August 2026 – you can view the most recent reviews on the App Store or the Google Play Store (our reviews get better every year as we continue to update and improve the app!).

Google Play Store Score:4.1 Stars2.3 Stars2.6 Stars

When the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app released in 2016, it was the first integrated kiln control mobile app on the market. While our competitors have tried to catch up over the past eight years, TAP Kiln Control Mobile remains the only true remote kiln control app on the market (as far as we know!).

Orton has a detachable handheld controller option (that’s limited by range), as well as kiln monitoring software for Windows that doesn’t include schedule creating, editing, or execution.

The Bartlett Genesis 2.0 (their flagship touchscreen controller) includes the KilnAid App which allows users to monitor kiln firing but doesn’t provide options for remote control. On the App Store, the KilnAid App has a rating of 2.5 stars, compared to 4.8 for TAP (47.92% lower). On the Google Play Store, KilnAid has a rating of 2.3 stars, compared to 4.1 for TAP (46.34% lower).

Skutt’s KilnLink App allows for remote kiln viewing and diagnostics but doesn’t include any remote control or schedule creation features. It has a 1.9 star rating on the App Store and a 2.6 star rating on the Google Play Store (60.42% and 36.59% lower than the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app, respectively).

Additionally, TAP Kiln Control Mobile is significantly more popular than Bartlett KilnAid with 230 total reviews and 5k+ downloads on the Play Store, compared to 107 reviews and 1k+ downloads for Bartlett KilnAid. While KilnLink’s downloads are comparable with 5k+ downloads as well, it’s only received 144 total reviews compared to TAP’s 230, with consistently lower scores across the board.

When you do a side-by-side feature comparison, it’s easy to see why TAP Kiln Control Mobile gets consistently higher reviews: It offers more features for free than KilnAid and KilnLink do in their paid plans, and its premium plan is the only one that allows for fully remote firing adjustments, kiln control, and schedule creation that syncs in real-time with your controller.

how does tap kiln control mobile compare to bartlett kilnaid how do the reviews for tap kiln control mobile compare to Skutt KilnLink is TAP Kiln Control Mobile better than is TAP Kiln Control Mobile worth it is tap kiln control mobile better than kiln aid is skutt kiln control mobile better than kilnlink

Short Answer: Actually, Bartlett KilnAid and Skutt KilnLink are not free, and their paid tiers offer less functionality than the free version of TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

Bartlett KilnAid and Skutt KilnLink apps both have paid subscription plans. They just aren’t actively advertised and provide a very limited feature set – neither app includes any functionality for remote kiln control.

Additionally, TAP Kiln Control Mobile offers a free and paid plan, with the free plan providing more features and functionality than you’d get with paid versions of KilnAid or KilnLink.

For instance, Bartlett KilnAid charges $1.99/month or $19.99/year for push notification alerts and alarms, firing logs, and diagnostic data. All of those are free on TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

Skutt KilnLink is $100/year per kiln for push notification alerts, exportable firing logs, diagnostics, and maintenance notes. All of those are free on TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

On TAP Kiln Control Mobile, real-time firing monitoring, the ability to abort firing, review firing and error logs, adjust settings, review diagnostics, set preventative maintenance alerts, receive push notification alerts and alarms, and calculate firing costs are all completely free. The Premium Plan ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) unlocks end-to-end remote kiln control, including Remote Start – features not available anywhere else.

Also, it’s important to note that all proceeds from the premium subscriptions from TAP Kiln Control Mobile are invested back into the app to support servers, storage, and developing new features and fixes.

Follow the instructions below to connect your controller to the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app…

Please note: For the original TAP Controller, you will need to purchase the WiFi Dongle to connect to WiFi; TAP II, TAP II Pro, TAP Micro, TAP Monitor, and TAP&Go all have integrated WiFi.

Before being able to link your TAP Kiln Control Mobile app to your TAP Controller, you will need to:

  • Download the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app on your smart phone or tablet (download for Android or iOS) and set up your account by following the prompts on the app’s screen.
  • Connect your TAP Kiln Controller to a wireless network via the controller interface by going to Menu>Settings>Network>Wireless, selecting the desired network and entering any required credentials.

TAP Controllers are only able to connect to wireless networks that meet the following requirements:

  • 2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.
  • Unsecured networks are also supported – but networks that use a captive portal (a la many cafes and airports) are not.
  • Signal strength of at least two bars is recommended. Once both of these conditions are met, linking your TAP Kiln Control Mobile app to your controller is super easy.

On your controller, go to Menu>Settings>Network to find your controller’s UID (Unique Identifier):

On the app, go to Summary, hit the + Icon at the bottom right, enter a name for your kiln (it can be anything you want), as well as the UID from the controller, and hit SAVE. You will then see that kiln from your Summary Screen of the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app. Clicking on it will let you access that controller from the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app.

(If your kiln is still showing offline after connecting your controller to a wireless network, reboot your controller by turning it off and on).

Short Answer: No, any given TAP Controller can only be monitored and controlled from a single TAP Kiln Control Mobile user account. But there is a workaround…

Each TAP Controller can only be monitored and controlled from a single TAP Kiln Control Mobile user account. However, if you want multiple people to be able to monitor a single kiln, you can create one user account and share the password amongst multiple users.

That way, multiple users can be logged in simultaneously. This is a great feature to use in a studio environment if students would like to check on their project status.

We are currently working on developing a Studio Mode to allow multiple users to monitor the same kiln with different permissions, which will be awesome for a studio or classroom setting. That will be coming soon!

Short Answer: You can find your UID (or “unique identifier”) by navigating to Menu>Settings>Network on your TAP Kiln Controller.

A UID is a unique identifier associated with all TAP Kiln Controllers. It is used as a way to address the controller and make sure that the right data is going to the right place.

The UID can be found on the TAP, TAP II, and TAP II Controller by navigating to Menu>Settings>Network.

You’ll need your controller’s UID when setting up TAP Kiln Control Mobile. Additionally, we may ask for your controller’s UID to help you with troubleshooting, so that we can pinpoint exactly what’s going on with your controller.

Short Answer: All subscription fees for TAP Kiln Control Mobile go directly back into the app for maintaining our servers, developing new features, and providing improvements for all users. Without these fees, we wouldn’t be able to provide TAP Kiln Control Mobile as a service for all of our users.

While we’d love to be able to give away all of the premium features of the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app for free, developing an app was a major investment for us – and we have big plans for future upgrades. 100% of the net subscription fees for the Premium Plan go directly back into the app for maintaining our servers, developing new features, and providing improvements for all users.

We understand why some users are frustrated by the prospect of having to pay a subscription for an app when they already made a significant investment in buying a new kiln or controller. While we’re sympathetic to this frustration, we do want to remind you that you’re not paying a subscription to use your controller, you’re paying a subscription to use our app – which is completely optional and more of a convenience factor!

Additionally, we provide all remote firing monitoring features, as well as the ability to abort firings, review logs, adjust settings, access advanced diagnostics, receive push notifications, calculate firing costs, and set preventative maintenance alerts as part of our free plan. Most of these features – if they’re available at all – are paid features for Bartlett KilnAid or Skutt KilnLink. And neither of those apps allows true remote control or firing adjustments.

Below you can find the Free and Premium features for TAP II and TAP II Pro:

A comparison of free and premium features of TAP Kiln Control Mobile on the TAP II Pro
why do i have to pay where is there a paid subscription why does tap kiln control mobile cost money what is the difference between paid and free plans for tap kiln control mobile paid vs free why is there an extra charge

Short Answer: The difference between a Premium Subscription and a Free Subscription for TAP Kiln Control Mobile depends on your controller model. But all features related to monitoring, safety, diagnostics, and maintenance are always free for all users.

Free Features for TAP Kiln Control Mobile

No matter your kiln controller model, TAP Kiln Control Mobile features related to temperature monitoring, safety, diagnostics, and maintenance are always free for all users. These include:

  • Firing Monitoring: Real-time view of active firing details, including ramp rate, setpoint, hold time, and remaining steps.
  • Abort Firing: Remotely abort your firing.
  • Logs Review: View and delete firing logs and view and clear error logs.
  • Settings Management: Manage general controller settings.
  • Diagnostics Review: View and clear relay, element, and thermocouple usage and receive alerts when these components are at 80% of life.
  • Push Notifications: Receive push notifications when schedule steps advance, setpoints or hold times are achieved, or errors occur.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Set threshold values for relay, element, and thermocouple life.
  • Cost Calculator: Set cost per kilowatt hour and kiln power settings to calculate real-time costs for active firings.

We don’t believe in restricting access to these types of features.

In short, a Free Subscription for TAP Kiln Control Mobile allows you to control all necessary kiln functions remotely. Other kiln monitoring apps like Bartlett KilnAid and Skutt KilnLink charge for many of these features (if they even have them at all!).

Premium Features for TAP Kiln Control Mobile

The Premium Subscription (available from $4.99/Month or $49.99/Year) unlocks additional functionality and quality of life features that aren’t available on any other kiln monitoring app.

For our flagship TAP II Pro and the discontinued original TAP Controller, the Free Subscription also includes full access to every feature except for Remote Start.

For our other models like TAP II, the following features are only available with a Premium Subscription:

  • Firing Adjustments: View real-time firing log graphs, edit active schedules, and skip steps.
  • Remote Start: Start your kiln firing remotely from your app.
  • Schedule Management: Remotely create, edit, and delete stored schedules.
  • Offload Logs: Export your logs from your device via email.

Why is there a difference in premium vs. free features between TAP II and TAP II Pro? Simple: TAP II Pro represents a higher initial investment that comes with long-term savings.

While we’d love to be able to offer every feature for free, we rely on net subscription fees to maintain our servers, develop new features, and provide improvements for all users.

Short Answer: Only the original TAP Kiln Controller [discontinued] requires a separate WiFi Dongle to connect to a wireless network. All other TAP Controller models have integrated WiFi.

As of 2025, every new TAP Kiln Controller has integrated WiFi and does not require a separately purchased WiFi dongle to connect to a wireless network.

This includes TAP II, TAP II Pro, TAP Micro, TAP Monitor, and TAP&Go.

The original TAP Kiln Controller – now discontinued – requires a separately purchased TP-Link TL-WN823n WiFi dongle to connect to WiFi.

Short Answer: The TAP Kiln Control Mobile app is only available on iOS or Android.

TAP Kiln Control Mobile is built from the ground up to be a mobile app. There is no desktop or web-based application.

All TAP Controller remote monitoring and control must be completed through the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app on iOS or Android. However, you do have the option to export your firing logs via email for more detailed review from your desktop or laptop.

Follow the instructions to troubleshoot the connection between your controller and TAP Kiln Control Mobile.

First, you need to ensure that you’re connected to a supported network.

TAP Controllers are only able to connect to wireless networks that meet the following requirements:

  • 2.4 GHz wireless network with WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security.
  • Unsecured networks are also supported – but networks that use a captive portal (a la many cafes and airports) are not.
  • WPA3 and EAP networks are not supported.
  • Signal strength of at least two bars is recommended (network latency or weak signal strength can negatively affect controller online status).

If you were already connected to a network that fit these requirements and that previously worked with your controller and haven’t changed your network name or network password, then most likely there was a connection timeout and a simple reboot will solve it. To reboot your controller, turn it off and on again and then wait 10 minutes.

If you have never connected to the network before, or you recently changed your network name or network password, please follow the instructions below:

On your controller, go to Menu>Settings>Network. Then select the Wireless tab. From there, select your preferred wireless network and press Connect to Network. Enter your WiFi’s password, if applicable. When the controller returns to the Status tab, power off the controller, and then power back on. Recheck connection status in the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app.

Additionally, hardware problems may cause your controller to have issues connecting to your wireless network. For the original TAP Controller, inspect your WiFi dongle and make sure it is securely connected to the USB port. For the TAP II and TAP II Pro Controllers, inspect the WiFi antenna – make sure it is unobstructed and pointed towards your router and doesn’t have any signs of damage.

If the problem persists, please contact SDS Industries for further troubleshooting assistance.

Please note: TAP Controllers connect directly to the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app through a secure, dedicated SDS Industries server.

Your TAP Controller connects directly to an SDS Industries server. The TAP Kiln Control Mobile app connects to the same SDS Industries server.

The database on the server is updated with data from your controller. The server then sends data to the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app, when requested.

The server also transmits commands to the TAP Controller, when directed through the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app. Your TAP controller is not accessible through a local network by navigating to the kiln’s IP address, meaning you don’t have to worry about someone hijacking your kiln!
